Mrs. R: A Miraculous Recovery
Mrs. R is a retired special education teacher who enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She came to Kindred after being admitted to a short -term hospital with flu-like symptoms. Soon after her admission to the traditional hospital, her condition deteriorated rapidly and she went into respiratory failure as a result of ARDS. Mrs. R was placed on a ventilator and became hypoxic, falling into a comatose state. Her doctors
realized that Mrs. R needed specialized care and transferred her to Kindred Hospital Fort Worth Southwest.

Upon admission to Kindred on April 7, Mrs. R was in critical but stable condition on full ventilator support.
With her family standing by, prepared for the worst, Mrs. R fought, miraculously emerging from her coma in early May after persistent coma stimulation.
The Kindred respiratory was then able to begin attempting to wean Mrs. R from the ventilator. Once they achieved this goal, Mrs. R was able to communicate using a Passy – Muir Valve and eventually to have her trach removed. She no longer required oxygen and was able to communicate effectively at the conversational level.
The rehabilitation team, consisting of physical, occupational and speech therapists, also assessed Mrs. R and devised a program tailored to her needs. Because Mrs. R had an extended hospital stay, she was initially unable to even get out of bed without full assistance. Physical therapy worked tirelessly with her and eventually Mrs. R was able to progress
to sitting on the edge of the bed with 50% assistance. Mrs. R continued to progress with therapy and was able to roll in bed with very little assistance and get out of bed with as little as 25% assistance from the staff.
Having improved consistently throughout her stay at Kindred Hospital, Mrs. R was transferred to a skilled nursing facility to be closer to her family and friends for continued rehab.
Kindred Hospital Fort Worth Southwest’s success is apparent in stories like these as well as in our quality scores – our patients and families rate our quality of care at 100 percent and 100 percent would recommend Kindred.
